Roasted Okra and Demulcent Foods


Roasted Okra


Add the okra to a bowl and drizzle avocado oil to coat. Add garlic powder, salt and pepper to taste. Mix well and bake at 425F for 15-20 min.


I ate a whole tray by myself since my partner gets really put off by how slimy they are. The sliminess is real and that's part of Okra's magic. Okra is a demulcent food. Demulcents contain mucilage which is a gooey substance produced by many plants. Mucilage containing foods have a direct soothing and healing action on the areas of the body they touch, such as the lining of the stomach and the intestines.


Demulcent foods are great allies in the treatment of inflammatory conditions affecting the mucosal lining such as colitis, gastritis, ulcers and even sore throats. They can also be very helpful in the treatment of constipation.


Oats, flaxseeds, and chia seeds are some other examples of demulcent foods. These will need the addition of water to bring out their demulcent properties. Many medicinal herbs are also demulcents. Some examples are: marshmallow root, slippery elm, licorice root and corn silk.
