St. John's Wort
Hypericum perforatum brings light and warmth to the darker seasons. She absorbs heat from the summer’s sun and holds it in her bright yellow flowers and tiny leaves, and makes it last. St John’s Wort is a perfect medicine for the winter.
I love it most for its nervine and anti-inflammatory activities when taken internally. St John’s Wort has a long history of use as an anti-depressant, although the mechanism of action of this activity is not understood. I have heard speculation that it may reduce inflammation in the brain thus assisting cases in which this may be the root cause of the condition. Nevertheless it is recommended in the treatment of depression triggered during menopause, an indication supported by numerous clinical trials. I have found it to be a wonderful supporting herb during the darker
months. Some of us may benefit from such support as early as the fall when the balance of dark and light shifts resulting in shorter days and longer nights.
I have recently finally connected with SJW’s topical healing properties when used as an external remedy. An oil infusion is used to speed the healing of wounds, bruises a
